Valley of Gangala

Gangala Valley is a valley in Nanjo City, Okinawa, formed when a limestone cave collapsed. Until hundreds of thousands of years ago, it was a cave; after collapsing, it became a forest. The valley’s nature is preserved as-is, and visitors explore via guided tours led by specialist guides. The area is about the size of one Tokyo Dome, but the tour focuses on key highlights. With features like a 20 m “Great Lord” tree (a giant banyan) growing in the former cave space and powerful untouched scenery, it’s an impressive spot. Places that feel like a real-life Jurassic Park are rare in Japan. Many sacred sites remain, and spots such as Ikiga Cave and Inagu Cave are popular for fertility prayers. Excavations are still ongoing, and you may sometimes be able to view dig sites. Because footing can be uneven, wear sneakers. Reservations are strongly recommended for the tour. Access: about 30 minutes by car from Okinawa Airport.
