Mid-sea road

Kaichu Road is a prefectural road in Uruma City, Okinawa Prefecture, with a total length of about 4.75 km. Because you can drive straight through the sea, it creates the illusion of driving on top of the ocean. Built as an embankment road across shallow sea areas, it runs relatively low above the water. Crossing this road connects you to islands such as Henza Island, Hamahiga Island, Miyagi Island, and Ikei Island. Marine sports are also popular here, and along the way there is a “Sea Station” (like a roadside station but by the sea), making it enjoyable even as a simple drive. Hamahiga Island is considered a sacred island where the deities of Ryukyu creation are said to rest, with nature preserved in its original state. A stalactite formation called Shilmichu is said to be a sacred stone that grants children, attracting many visitors. Miyagi Island also has the Nuchimaasu salt-making factory, which you can tour. Drive all the way to Ikei Island, then return across Kaichu Road. Access is described as about 140 minutes by bus from Naha Bus Terminal.
