Ishibutai Tumulus

Ishibutai Tumulus is one of Japan’s largest square-shaped burial mounds and is located within Asuka Historical National Government Park. The name "Ishibutai" comes from the flat ceiling stone, which resembles a stage. Access is convenient from Kintetsu Kashihara-Jingu-mae Station East Exit or Asuka Station by taking the Nara Kotsu Asuka Loop Bus and getting off at the "Ishibutai" stop. Including its outer embankment, the tumulus measures about 80 meters on each side, conveying the power once held by the person buried there. It is widely believed to be the tomb of Soga no Umako, a key political figure who ruled jointly with Prince Shotoku. The surrounding area features a grassy plaza utilizing terraced rice field landscapes, the Asuka Kaze Stage multipurpose rest area, and shops, making it lively during peak seasons. The Asuka Historical National Government Park hosts monthly events unique to the Asuka region, making it an excellent destination for history enthusiasts and families alike.
