Hachimantai Mountaintop Rest House

The Hachimantai Summit Boardwalk is a walking trail leading to the summit area of Mt. Hachimantai, which straddles Iwate and Akita Prefectures. With no particularly steep or rugged sections like a typical mountain path, it can be enjoyed as an easy hike even for those not used to mountain climbing—taking about an hour to stroll. Along the way is Hachiman-numa, the largest pond in Hachimantai; the boardwalk is laid out to wrap around about half of the pond, letting you enjoy its grand scenery from various angles. There is also an observation point where you can take in a sweeping view of the pond reflecting the blue sky like a mirror together with the primeval forest. At the summit area, an observation deck is installed at an elevation of 1,613 m, offering a refreshing panorama over the primeval forest. In addition, from late May to early June, at Kagami-numa near the summit, the snowmelt pattern can resemble a dragon’s eye—an effect known as "Hachimantai Dragon Eye." Because the appearance varies with snowfall, thaw, and weather conditions, this mysterious natural phenomenon—seen only in this limited season—has become a popular spot in recent years.
