Lake Shikotsu

Lake Shikotsu is a freshwater lake in Chitose City, Hokkaido, and is known as the northernmost lake in Japan that does not freeze over. It is said to have the highest transparency in Japan, giving rise to the term "Shikotsu Blue." On clear days, surrounding peaks such as Mt. Eniwa and Mt. Tarumae reflect on the water, creating truly spectacular scenery. It is also the national park closest to Sapporo, and the area around the lake offers facilities like the "Wild Bird Forest" for birdwatching. Shikotsu Lake Onsen is well known and is sometimes called a "beauty bath." Day-use bathing is possible, and the water is said to feel silky and help skin look smoother. Near the hot spring town, there are souvenir shops and restaurants, making it a convenient stop after enjoying the lake. Activities around the lake include scuba diving, canoeing, and camping, and it’s even possible to cross the lake by canoe. There is also a sightseeing boat cruise (about 30 minutes) for an easy way to enjoy views from the water. Access is from Chitose Station on the JR Chitose Line, then take a Chuo Bus to "Shikotsuko" and walk about 3 minutes.
