Goryōkaku Tower
Goryokaku Tower is a 107-meter-tall observation tower standing next to the Special Historic Site Goryokaku. The first-generation tower was 60 meters tall, while the current second-generation tower reaches 107 meters. When the new tower was built, its structure was designed to match Goryokaku’s shape: the tower body is star-shaped and the observation deck is pentagonal. The first floor includes a light-filled atrium, and this wide space is also used for events. Other parts of the first floor mainly include shops and a floor display area. The second floor features a restaurant, and the observation deck is also on the second level, with capacity for about 500 people. In addition to enjoying the view, there is also an area where you can learn about the history of Goryokaku. From the observation deck, you can see not only the entire star-shaped Goryokaku layout but also a 360-degree panorama of Hakodate. The tower’s mascot character "GO-ta" appears on the first floor every weekend. To get to Goryokaku Tower, take the streetcar from JR Hakodate Station and get off at Goryokaku-Koen-mae, then proceed toward the park area.
