Shikairou
Shikairō is the birthplace of Nagasaki champon, and it is a must-stop restaurant in Nagasaki for travelers who want to taste the original. Founded in 1899 (Meiji 32), it serves not only the classic original champon and sara-udon regarded as the authentic house flavor, but also a wide range of à la carte dishes such as shrimp chili and crab omelet, plus well-rounded course menus. This makes it perfect for visitors who want to try many things but are not sure what to order. On the second floor of the building, the “Champon Museum” showcases Nagasaki’s history through the story of champon, and you can visit it for free. The fifth floor is an observation restaurant with floor-to-ceiling glass, and dining while looking out over Nagasaki Port is highly recommended. Access to Shikairō by public transportation is from JR Nagasaki Station: take the Nagasaki Electric Tramway Line 1 bound for Shofukuji for about 15 minutes, get off at “Oura Cathedral,” then walk about 1 minute. By car, exit the Kyushu Cross-Island Expressway at “Nagasaki Mangatsuka IC,” then travel via the Nagasaki Oita Line, Nagasaki Expressway, Nagasaki Dejima Road, and National Route 324 for about 8 km, taking roughly 10 minutes. The “Nagasaki Sightseeing Route Bus” operated by Nagasaki Bus is also very convenient for tourism, as it circulates major city attractions such as Glover Garden, Oura Cathedral, Oranda-zaka, Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown, Dejima, Peace Park, and the Atomic Bomb Museum.
