Glover Park
Glover Garden is a historic garden that opened in 1974 and covers about 30,000 square meters. The grounds include walking routes and are barrier-free, making it easy and safe to visit even with a wheelchair. From the late 16th century, many foreign merchants from Europe, China, and elsewhere arrived in this area. During Japan’s isolation era, Nagasaki served as a gateway to the outside world, and foreign residential districts were formed—one of which is Glover Garden. Inside the garden, three buildings—the former Glover House, the former Alt House, and the former Ringer House—are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Among them, the former Glover House is also registered as a component property of the World Heritage site “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining.” Access to Glover Garden by public transportation is via the Nagasaki Electric Tramway: from JR Nagasaki Station, take Line 1 bound for Shofukuji and get off at “Shinchi Chinatown,” transfer to Line 5 bound for Ishibashi, get off at “Oura Cathedral,” and walk about 7 minutes. By car, exit the Kyushu Cross-Island Expressway at “Nagasaki Mangatsuka IC,” then travel via the Nagasaki Oita Line, Nagasaki Expressway, Nagasaki Dejima Road, and National Route 324 for about 9 km, taking roughly 10 minutes.
