Kameyama Shachu Memorial
The Kameyama Shachu Memorial Museum is a museum operated by Nagasaki City on the site of “Kameyama Shachu,” a ronin and trading group formed by Sakamoto Ryoma and his comrades in 1865 (Keio 1) during the late Edo period. Before the group’s formation, the area had been a production center for “Kameyama-yaki” pottery, but after the business closed, Ryoma and his companions rented and used the property—effectively as a base for anti-shogunate activities. For two years, it served as a hub for efforts to overthrow the Edo/Tokugawa shogunate, and it was also used for commercial activities such as shipping operations and brokering weapons and firearms—functions similar to a modern trading company. Because of this, it is sometimes described as Japan’s first trading company. Exhibits include a replica of Ryoma’s beloved boots, photographs of his comrades, and books and documents, making it a well-supported spot among Ryoma fans. Access by public transportation: from JR Nagasaki Station, take the tram bound for Hotaru Chaya from the Nagasaki Station-mae stop for about 8 minutes, get off at “Shin-Daiku-machi,” then walk about 11 minutes. By bus, take Route 50 via City Hall bound for Kazagashira-yama from the JR Nagasaki Station East Exit bus stop, get off at “Kazagashira-yama,” and walk about 11 minutes. There is no parking, so public transportation is recommended.
