Temple of Confucius Chinese Museum

The Nagasaki Confucius Shrine and Museum of Chinese History was founded in 1893 (Meiji 26) by the Qing government (present-day China) and Chinese residents living in Japan, and it has undergone many renovations to reach its current form. The Confucius Shrine’s main temple is in Shandong Province, China, and this site is Japan’s only full-scale Chinese assembly hall and mausoleum, decorated with brilliant traditional beauty. The Museum of Chinese History was established in 1983 to promote Japan–China friendship. It houses a permanent collection of national-treasure-class Chinese artifacts, centered on items from the Palace Museum in Beijing, and is described as the only museum outside China where such treasures are continuously exhibited. Exhibits are rotated about once every 2–3 years. Access by car: about 8 minutes from the “Dejima” interchange via National Route 324 after exiting at “Nagasaki Mangatsuka IC” on the Kyushu Cross-Island Expressway. By public transportation, take Tram Line 1 bound for Shofukuji from JR Nagasaki Station for about 8 minutes, transfer at “Shinchi Chinatown” to the tram bound for Ishibashi, get off at “Oura Cathedral,” then walk about 3 minutes. The “Nagasaki Sightseeing Route Bus” operated by Nagasaki Bus is also convenient for touring major attractions such as Glover Garden, Oura Cathedral, Oranda-zaka, Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown, Dejima, Peace Park, and the Atomic Bomb Museum.
