Experience details

Begin your journey at Seki Station, the gateway to the area, where you will meet your local guide. From there, walk through the very streets once traveled by countless pilgrims, merchants, and commoners.

Follow nearly the entire stretch of Seki-juku’s long, narrow layout, allowing you to immerse yourself in the unique structure and role of post towns—an essential part of Japan’s early modern transportation network.

Learn about the history of Seki-juku, a rare and beautifully preserved post town. Once a thriving stop along the Tokaido, the main road connecting Kyoto and Edo, Seki-juku was strategically located near the mountainous border between the Ise and Nara regions. It is said that travelers would either recover from the strain of mountain crossings here or rest up before taking them on.

While much of the old Tokaido route has been transformed into modern highways for automobiles, Seki-juku remains an extraordinary exception—one of the few places where the historic townscape has survived.
