Seimei Shrine

Seimei Shrine is a shrine near Ichijo Modoribashi Bridge in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City, dedicated to Abe no Seimei, a mid-Heian-period astronomer and onmyoji (yin-yang master). The shrine was founded in 1007 (Kanko 4) by Emperor Ichijo to honor Seimei’s achievements, with the shrine buildings constructed on the site of Seimei’s former residence. At the time of its founding, Seimei Shrine occupied a much larger area than it does today, but after the Onin War its scale was reduced, and ancient books and treasures were dispersed, with the buildings remaining in a long period of decline. Later, reconstruction was promoted by devoted worshippers, and in recent years Abe no Seimei has become widely known through literature, manga, and films. The torii gate bears a pentagram emblem, and unique elements associated with Seimei as an onmyoji—such as the sun-and-moon pillars and the Four Guardian Deities gate—are featured throughout the shrine. It is believed to bring benefits such as protection from evil and warding off misfortune, and amulets and talismans are available. The shrine faces Horikawa Street and is directly in front of the city bus stop Ichijo Modoribashi / Seimei Shrine. Ichijo Modoribashi Bridge is also associated with many legends, and it is said that even today brides avoid crossing it on their wedding day because they dislike its name.
