Yubatake (hot water field)
Yubatake is the symbolic spot of Kusatsu Onsen in Kusatsu Town, Gunma Prefecture. Located in the center of the hot spring town, it constantly sends up dramatic steam while hot spring water gushes out at about 4,000 liters per minute, making it a must-visit spot for tourists. Originally, a “yubatake” refers to a facility where hot spring source water is channeled over the surface or through wooden troughs to collect yunohana (mineral deposits), adjust the water temperature, and aerate the water to remove harmful concentrations of hydrogen sulfide. Yubatake facilities are often found in hot spring areas that collect yunohana. However, when people say “Yubatake,” they usually mean Kusatsu’s famous one. The surrounding area has stone-paved walkways and a great atmosphere for a quick stop while sightseeing. After sunset, it’s illuminated, and together with the hot spring town vibe, it becomes a perfect place for a post-bath stroll.
