Tsuruchan

“Tsuru-chan” is a long-established coffee shop founded in 1925 (Taisho 14) and is said to be the oldest café in Kyushu. Its exterior and interior feel rich with history and dignity—every angle is picture-worthy. One recommended specialty is the milkshake invented by the first owner: a satisfying drink that combines sweetened condensed milk and shaved ice, and is considered one of Nagasaki’s representative treats. The classic must-try is “Turkish Rice,” a Nagasaki local specialty: a mild pilaf with vegetables like carrots, corn, and green peas, topped with a pork cutlet and served with spaghetti on the side, all brought together with curry sauce. It’s widely recommended by locals. Another popular option is “Steak Turkish,” featuring a large steak served on top of pilaf—a hearty, filling menu item. Access: from JR Nagasaki Station, take the streetcar from Nagasaki Station-mae to “Shianbashi” stop, then walk about 2 minutes.
