Shianbashi Ramen

Shianbashi Ramen is a casual Chinese restaurant located right near the Shianbashi streetcar stop in Nagasaki. Although the name includes “ramen,” the most popular menu item here is actually “chanpon.” Other well-loved options include “Bakudan Chanpon,” “Special Chanpon,” “Bakukara Chanpon,” and “Spicy Chanpon.” The chanpon is pork-bone-based yet light in taste—so satisfying that you can easily finish a bowl even after drinking. Of course, the ramen that gives the shop its name is also highly recommended. The lineup includes bean-sprout ramen, spicy varieties, wonton noodles, char siu ramen, and gomoku (mixed topping) ramen—classic neighborhood Chinese fare. The noodles are very thin, almost like somen, which pairs wonderfully with the soup. The menu also features fried rice, gyoza, and even oden. With shochu and beer available, it’s also great as a drinking spot. It is very popular, so expect to wait in line. Access: from JR Nagasaki Station, take Tram Line 1 from Nagasaki Station-mae for about 10 minutes, get off at “Shianbashi,” then walk about 1–2 minutes.
