The statue of peace
The Peace Statue was created as a symbol of the wish for peace and a reminder that the tragic past—when about 150,000 people died due to the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945 (Showa 20)—should never be repeated. The bronze Peace Statue, standing 9.7 meters tall and weighing 30 tons, was created by Nagasaki-born sculptor Seibo Kitamura. Every year on August 9, a moment of silence is observed here to mourn the victims, and a peace declaration is delivered to the world. Access to the Peace Statue by car is via the Nagasaki Expressway: exit at “Nagasaki Tarami IC,” continue via the Nagasaki Bypass, exit at “Kawahira IC (Peace Park / Showa-machi area),” then drive about 5 minutes toward the city center. By public transportation, take the tram bound for Akasako from JR Nagasaki Station, get off at “Atomic Bomb Museum” stop, then walk about 5 minutes. The statue is located inside Peace Park. The “Nagasaki Sightseeing Route Bus” operated by Nagasaki Bus is also very convenient for tourism, as it circulates major city attractions such as Glover Garden, Oura Cathedral, Oranda-zaka, Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown, Dejima, Peace Park, and the Atomic Bomb Museum.
