Fukiware Falls
Fukiware Falls is a famous scenic waterfall in Tone Town, Numata City, Gunma Prefecture, on the main stream of the Katashina River within the Fukiware Gorge, and is known as the “Niagara of the East.” While “Niagara” might suggest a tall waterfall plunging dramatically, Fukiware Falls is not very high—its drop is only about 7 meters. So why is it called the “Niagara of the East”? One look at its shape makes it clear: the waterfall’s form resembles Niagara, cutting into the riverbed in a U-shaped channel. This type of waterfall is rare nationwide, and it’s an excellent photography spot. Because access by public transportation can be a bit inconvenient, driving is recommended. Also note that entry is prohibited during the winter season from early December to early April.
