Adachi museum of art

The Adachi Museum of Art is in Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture. It exhibits artworks collected by Adachi Zenko, a businessman from Yasugi, and is especially known for its collection of Yokoyama Taikan (said to be about 130 works). It also holds modern Japanese paintings and other works by artists such as Takeuchi Seiho, Hashimoto Kansetsu, Kawai Gyokudo, and Uemura Shoen, as well as ceramics, children’s art, and wood carvings. Adachi Zenko himself is portrayed as a passionate self-made entrepreneur who built the museum from nothing. Another major highlight is the garden: a roughly 50,000-tsubo (approx. 165,000 m²) Japanese garden divided into six zones, featuring stones and pines that Adachi personally sought out across Japan. It has been ranked Japan’s best garden for 16 consecutive years by the U.S. publication “Journal of Japanese Gardening,” and it also received the highest three-star rating in the Michelin Green Guide Japan. The museum is popular with both domestic and overseas visitors. Access: from Yasugi Station, about 20 minutes by bus; a free shuttle bus also operates.
