Osaki Hachimangu Shrine

Osaki Hachimangu Shrine is a shrine founded by Date Masamune in 1607 (Keicho 12) as Sendai’s guardian shrine. It is known for blessings such as warding off misfortune, disaster prevention and good fortune, victory, and safe childbirth. If you get off at the bus stop along Route 48, you’ll see a grand red first torii with illuminated “Hachimangu” characters. Passing through and climbing the long stairs brings you to a precinct surrounded by sacred forest. The shrine buildings are praised as a masterpiece of Momoyama architecture, featuring a dignified black-lacquer exterior and interior and brilliantly colorful carvings—well worth seeing. The main hall is designated a National Treasure, and other buildings are designated Important Cultural Properties. Every year on January 14, the “Matsutaki-sai (Donto Festival)” is held, famous for the “Hadaka-mairi” pilgrimage toward the sacred fire. The September annual festival features Noh kagura and yabusame rituals. Access: right by the Sendai City Bus stop “Osaki Hachimangu-mae.” Buses from Sendai Station West Exit bus terminal or from near Sendai Subway “Kita-Yonbancho Station” (Futsukamachi Kita-Yonbancho bus stop) are convenient. By car, a free parking lot is available on the north side of the shrine.
