Matsushima Bay
Matsushima Bay is one of Japan’s “Three Scenic Views,” famous for its extraordinary landscape of over 260 islands. It has been celebrated as a premier scenic spot since the Edo period, and even Matsuo Basho visited. Viewing points like Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park (about 5 minutes by car from JR Senseki Line “Matsushima-Kaigan Station”) and the “Four Great Views of Matsushima” offer sweeping panoramas. Sightseeing cruises that circle the islands are also popular. The Matsushima-Kaigan area has many highlights, including islands connected by vermilion bridges, Zuigan-ji (Date Masamune’s family temple), and the symbolic Godaido. Oyster huts offering all-you-can-eat grilled oysters are another Matsushima specialty—perfect for enjoying Miyagi’s rich, creamy oysters. Access: by train, about 5 minutes on foot from JR Senseki Line “Matsushima-Kaigan Station.” By car, about 10 minutes from Sanriku Expressway “Matsushima-Kaigan IC.” You can also take a cruise from Shiogama: about 50 minutes from Marine Gate Shiogama.
