Tatsukushi coast

Tatsukushi Coast is a scenic spot near Cape Ashizuri, in the Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park. Layers of sandstone and mudstone from around 20 million years ago were shaped by wave and wind erosion to form the current landscape. A highlight is “Otake-Kotake,” and there are many bamboo-like rock formations and honeycomb-patterned surfaces, each with colorful names such as “Kaeru no Senbikiren,” “Ranma-ishi,” “Kabuto-ishi,” and “Koi no Takinobori.” In total there are 48 natural “objects,” and the area is described as a treasure trove of geoscience learning materials. In Minokoshi Coast Bay, you can see one of Japan’s largest table coral (Shikoro-sango) reefs. A glass-bottom boat to Minokoshi lets you look down on the coral reef. Nearby are Ashizuri Undersea Museum, Ashizuri Marine Aquarium, and Tatsukushi glass boats—letting you see sea clarity on a level comparable to Kashiwajima up close. The coast has a walking path, but footing can be poor, so take care. Both viewing and parking are free. Access is about 15 minutes by car from Tosashimizu City Hall, or about 80 minutes by bus from Nakamura Station.
