Shimanto River

The Shimanto River is a Class A river flowing through Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture, and is the largest river in Shikoku. The main stream has no dam, and it is called Japan’s last clear stream, making it a popular sightseeing spot for both locals and tourists. It is also selected among Japan’s 100 hidden regions. One of the river’s best-known features today is its 47 chinka-bashi (submersible bridges), which draw many visitors daily. In May, the famous “koinobori river crossing” event takes place, and you can enjoy canoeing, camping, and fishing while immersing yourself in nature. You can also take a roofed sightseeing boat tour on the Shimanto River; the boats ride so low that you can almost touch the water. Fishing for ayu, freshwater prawns (tenaga-ebi), and akame is also popular. Cycling along the Shimanto River is another favorite, and rental bicycles are available. Around the river you’ll find the Hobby Hall, hot springs, parks, eel restaurants, and more, making it fun for both children and adults. The scenery differs between the upper, middle, and lower reaches. Enjoy the crystal-clear water of the Shimanto River. Access is about a 7-minute walk from Tosa-Showa Station on the JR Yodo Line.
