Iwama Submersible Bridge

Iwama Chinka-bashi is a submersible bridge in Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture. Along with Sada Chinka-bashi, it was once considered one of the two major chinka-bashi sightseeing spots. However, in Heisei 29 (2017), corrosion of the bridge piers caused the center of the bridge to collapse into a V-shape. It has been repaired, but only local pedestrians can cross; in general it is closed to traffic. Even so, it remains a famous bridge featured on TV and posters, so many tourists visit. From the bridge you can access sandbars, and the scenery has a pleasing current and open views. At the parking area there is also a song monument by singer Hiroshi Miyama. From Iwama Chaya, you can look down on Iwama Chinka-bashi, and the area is busy with visitors. River activities like canoeing are also popular. Shimanto City has other chinka-bashi bridges such as Fukagi, Takase, Katsuma, Kuchiyanai, Iwama, Nagao, Nakahanke, and Hanke. Nearby are Yasunami Waterwheel Village and Kaiyodo Hobby Hall Shimanto, making it a good drive route too. Access is about 1 hour 15 minutes by car from Shimantocho Chuo IC on the Kochi Expressway.
