Abashiri Prison Museum
The Abashiri Prison Museum (Hakubutsukan Abashiri Kangoku) is Japan’s only prison museum, located within the Abashiri Quasi-National Park, where visitors can tour preserved buildings from the former Abashiri Prison. You can see historical exhibits such as actual tableware used in the Meiji era and learn about the prison’s history, including its role during the development of Hokkaido. Several of the facilities are designated as Important Cultural Properties. One of the museum’s most popular features is the Prison Cafeteria, where you can try “prison meals” inspired by those once served to inmates—this cafeteria can be visited for lunch even without purchasing museum admission. Visitors can also view 226 cells in total, including both solitary and shared cells that were used until 1986. The archive and exhibition areas include detailed records related to prisoners and the circumstances of Hokkaido’s settlement, while hands-on corners may offer simple experience programs such as farming activities. The museum provides both free and paid guided tours, so it’s worth choosing the option that best fits your interests. Access is easy: from JR Abashiri Station, take a bus bound for the Abashiri Prison Museum; the ride takes about 10 minutes.
