Ikaho Shrine
Ikaho Shrine is a shrine near the Ikaho Onsen town and Ikaho Yumoto, also known as a “women-friendly” power spot. It is an Engishiki-listed shrine located at the top of the 365 stone steps—Ikaho’s symbol—said to raise your fortune when you climb them. Originally it was in a different location and was a shrine tied to worship of Mt. Mizusawa, but according to Heian-period documents it seems to have moved near Ikaho at some point. Today it enshrines two main deities, Okuninushi-no-Mikoto and Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto, as gods of hot springs and medicine, and it is considered the guardian shrine of Ikaho Onsen. Because it’s close to the onsen town, many people stop by when visiting the hot springs. Along the stone steps there are sightseeing spots and footbaths, so you can enjoy a relaxed stroll while visiting. The annual grand festival is held on September 19, and many visitors come on that day as well. Located within the hot spring town, it’s very accessible by car or on foot, so it’s recommended to visit when you stop by Ikaho Onsen.
