Yume no Tsuribashi suspension bridge

Yume no Tsuribashi (Dream Suspension Bridge) is a roughly 90-meter-long suspension bridge spanning a dam lake famous for its beautiful emerald-green color. It is located on the Sumatakyo area’s Sumata River, which flows into the Oi River sourced in the Southern Alps, and it’s a popular scenic destination where you can experience untouched nature. The bridge is about 90 meters long, and the planks underfoot are only about 20 cm wide—two boards side by side—so it delivers a thrill. More than the suspense, however, what captivates people most is the lake’s striking color. The mysterious scenery shifts between emerald green and cobalt blue depending on weather and sunlight, drawing many visitors. From the Sumatakyo Onsen town, a walking route of about 30 minutes leads to the bridge. Along the way there are steep stairs, steep slopes, and slippery sections, so proceed carefully. During busy times the bridge becomes one-way, so you cannot turn back. The loop route that circles the onsen town and the bridge takes about 60 minutes total. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. After hiking, it’s recommended to stop by the day-use open-air bath “Bijodukuri no Yu” (Beauty-Making Hot Spring) run by the town to wash off sweat. Caution: please do not head to the bridge after dark; the route includes dangerous cliff areas and is within wildlife habitat, making nighttime walks very risky.
