Susa Shrine

Susa Shrine is a shrine in Izumo City that enshrines Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the hero who defeated Yamata-no-Orochi. Among the many Susanoo shrines across Japan, it is said to be the only one that enshrines his mitama (spirit). The shrine’s Kirime Shinji Nenbutsu-odori, part of the Kirime Shinji, is designated an Intangible Cultural Property of Shimane Prefecture and draws many visitors. Legends such as the “Seven Mysteries of Susa Shrine” are still told today. Situated in the mountains, the shrine feels especially mysterious and is also famous as a power spot. It has a giant cedar tree estimated to be 1,300 years old, which looks like it could grant you strength just by seeing it. Because people used to peel off and take the bark, it is now fenced and cannot be touched directly. Weddings can also be held here, and it is known as a sacred place that leaves a lasting impression. Access: from JR Izumoshi Station, take an Ichibata Bus to “Izumo Susa,” then a taxi about 5 minutes.
