Akiu Great Falls

Akiu Great Falls (Akiu Otaki) is a major waterfall selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls, with a width of 6 m and a drop of 55 m. It is sometimes counted among Japan’s three great waterfalls alongside Nachi and Kegon. In early summer fresh greenery and in autumn foliage, the view becomes even more striking. There are two main viewing points: the observation deck and the basin. The observation deck is reached by passing through the precincts of Akiu Otaki Fudoson and descending forest steps—about a 5–10 minute walk—giving a full view of the falls. The roaring sound and cool mist can reach the deck. Akiu Otaki Fudoson nearby is said to grant wishes and draws many worshippers. If you want to get closer, head to the basin: from the large parking lot, follow the riverside path for just under 30 minutes. You’ll feel intense spray and plenty of negative ions; because it’s rocky, sturdy shoes are essential. Access: about 15 minutes by car from the Akiu Onsen area; bus access is also possible from the onsen town or from the nearest “Ayashi Station.” On weekends, buses run from Sendai Station. By car from central Sendai, it’s under an hour—so a recommended day plan is to get power from the falls and enjoy a day-use bath in Akiu Onsen.
