Sendai Mediatheque

Sendai Mediatheque is a fully glass-walled building on Jozenji-dori. It has won many architecture awards, including the Good Design Award, and is known internationally among architecture fans. Its signature features include tube-like structural elements used in place of columns and a glass facade. From Sendai Subway Namboku Line “Kotodai-Koen Station,” exit via “Koen Exit 2,” then walk about 6 minutes with the Jozenji-dori zelkova trees on your left. From JR “Sendai Station,” it’s about a 20-minute walk, making it a nice stroll. On the 1st floor are a museum shop and a cafe. The museum shop sells curated items such as crafts from all six Tohoku prefectures, books on art/design/architecture, and stationery. The cafe offers Belgian beer, coffee, lunch, and more in an open, airy space. Floors 2–4 contain extensive collections including the library and audiovisual resources, and there are also galleries and other spaces inside. With greenery reflected in the glass facade and winter illumination, plus its unique structure, it’s packed with highlights and is a must-visit in Sendai.
