Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium

Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium is one of the largest aquariums in the Tohoku region, opened in 2015. With around 100 tanks, it’s a popular sightseeing spot in the Sendai Port area where you can see, touch, and feel a wide variety of marine life. Highlights include a massive tank recreating the rich seas of Sanriku, soothing jellyfish displays, and marine animals such as penguins and dolphins. Dolphin and sea lion performances are held in a stadium with one of the largest seating capacities in Tohoku; the pool design removes acrylic barriers, bringing you impressively close to the animals. The aquarium also continually offers unique seasonal events and hands-on programs, making it a place you’ll want to visit again and again. It’s right by the Sendai Tobu Road “Sendai Port IC,” and nearby outlets and shopping complexes make it easy to spend a full day in the area. By train, it’s about a 15-minute walk from JR Senseki Line “Nakanosakae Station.” A free shuttle bus (about 10 minutes) runs twice per hour (no service from 12:00 to 13:00).
