Jozenji-dori Avenue

Jozenji-dori is an iconic boulevard that symbolizes “City of Trees” Sendai. A zelkova-lined promenade stretches for about 700 meters, showing beautiful seasonal scenery throughout the year. Stylish shops and department stores line the street, making it great for shopping. It’s also known as an artsy street, featuring three bronze statues and the “Sendai Mediatheque,” a cultural facility with a library and galleries. The area becomes an event venue in every season—Aoba Festival in spring, Tanabata Festival in summer, Jazz Festival in autumn, and the Pageant of Starlight in winter—so it always feels lively. From JR “Sendai Station,” it’s about a 15–20 minute walk. If you take the Sendai Subway Namboku Line to “Kotodai-Koen Station,” go up to ground level from the South Exit to reach the eastern end of Jozenji-dori. Kotodai Park at the entrance is an urban oasis surrounded by office buildings like the prefectural office and city hall, with flowerbeds, plazas, an outdoor music hall, and fountains. Nearby is Tohoku’s largest entertainment district “Kokubuncho,” packed with restaurants and bars ranging from long-established to brand-new.
