Shinkyogoku Shopping Street
Shinkyogoku Shopping Street is a shopping arcade in central Kyoto City. This covered arcade runs 550 meters north to south between Sanjo Street and Shijo Street, and it sits between Teramachi Street and Kawaramachi Street. It is one of Kyoto’s leading entertainment districts, and the narrow street is lined with restaurants, movie theaters, souvenir shops, drugstores, and more, with many school trip groups also visiting. When Toyotomi Hideyoshi gathered many temples along Teramachi Street, entertainment shows, events, and teahouses opened within their precincts, drawing large crowds. In the Meiji era, a new street was created to organize this bustle, which became the beginning of Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. Today it adjoins eight shrines and temples, among which Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine at the eastern end of Nishiki Market is especially famous. Alongside long-established shops such as Honke Nishio Yatsuhashi, Sushi Otowa, and Genkyuhide Cutlery, you will also find variety-goods stores, souvenir shops, drugstores, fortune-telling shops, and major outlets including movie theaters, McDonald’s, and Starbucks Coffee. Access is convenient from both ends: Hankyu Kawaramachi Station connects to the south end, and Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Subway Station connects to the north end.
