Straw-grilled Myojinmaru
Myojinmaru is a restaurant famous for making katsuo no tataki (seared bonito) by grilling it over straw fire. It has branches not only in Shikoku but also in Tokyo. Inside the restaurant, they grill the bonito directly over straw, and the performance of grilling, slicing, and serving it immediately in front of you is very popular. The taste is also excellent—many consider it one of the most famous and delicious places to eat katsuo tataki in Kochi. The main bonito comes from multiple company-owned “bonito pole-and-line fishing vessels” (the boats are named Myojinmaru), and the company even produces its own rice and straw. With strict freshness and quality, it’s so good that not only tourists but locals say it’s the best tataki. While tataki is often eaten with ponzu, in Kochi many people eat it with salt, and Myojinmaru serves it with sun-dried salt as well. Myojinmaru’s first shop was in fact inside Hirome Market. Watch the bold straw-fire grilling and try the tataki. Access is about a 3-minute walk from Tosaden Kotsu Oohashidori tram stop.
