Hirome Market
Hirome Market is a large indoor food-stall village in Kochi City and is considered one of the pioneers of Japan’s yatai-mura style markets. Located close to Kochi Castle and the Sunday Market, it is very convenient and is a hugely popular tourist spot for both visitors and locals because you can sample Kochi’s food all at once. While it’s primarily dining, it also sells local products from Kochi Prefecture. There are many cuisines—Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Indian—but the main highlights are katsuo no tataki (seared bonito) and gyoza. Kochi has a strong yatai culture (there’s even a “yatai road”), and gyoza is famously excellent; of course, you can eat it here too. About 60 shops are inside, and since opening in 1998, it has continued evolving with changing tenants and offerings, earning fans of all genders and ages. Although it’s a great place to drink, you can also enjoy it fully without alcohol. Access is about a 3-minute walk from Tosaden Kotsu Oohashidori tram stop.
