Sakurajima
Sakurajima is a volcanic island in Kagoshima Bay, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is a rare island where volcanic activity remains active even today. Often called the symbol of Kagoshima, it attracts many tourists. The island has an area of about 77 km² and around 4,600 residents who live alongside the volcano. The volcano provides abundant blessings such as agricultural products (including Sakurajima daikon radish and Sakurajima komikan mandarins) and hot springs, and people live with these benefits. Facilities are also plentiful, including hot springs and Sakurajima Nature Dinosaur Park, as well as sightseeing spots like the buried torii gate at Kurokami and dolphin watching & cruises. It is also known for a concert by Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi, who held an all-night show here that drew 75,000 fans; the “Sakebi no Shozo” (Portrait of a Shout) created at the time still attracts visitors. Another unique experience is that hot spring water can appear if you dig into the beach sand. Getting to Sakurajima: it is about 15 minutes by ferry from Kagoshima Port. There are accommodations and restaurants, so you can enjoy a short trip atmosphere.
