Tenshochi

Tenshōchi is famous as one of Tohoku’s premier cherry blossom destinations. It is recognized among Japan’s "Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots" and is also counted as one of the "Michinoku Three Great Cherry Blossom Sites." A two-kilometer avenue of cherry trees blooms in a long season, from Somei Yoshino starting in mid-April through Kasumi-zakura into early May, painting the landscape in spectacular color. Each year during peak bloom, the Kitakami Tenshōchi Sakura Festival is held. Highlights include sightseeing horse-drawn carriages traveling beneath the cherry trees, pleasure boats and ferry crossings moving along the river, and roughly 300 carp streamers flying overhead—creating an atmosphere rich in classic Japanese seasonal charm. At night, the cherry tunnel is illuminated, producing an even more dramatic, dreamlike view for night-sakura lovers. In May, around 100,000 azaleas in red and white also bloom, adding another layer of beauty and calm for visitors. Beyond spring, the area offers seasonal scenery such as autumn foliage. While walking around, you can also visit nearby attractions like the "Michinoku Folklore Village" and the "Sato Hachiro Memorial Museum," adding cultural depth to your trip.
