Kaiun Bridge
Kaiunbashi Bridge is an iconic bridge spanning the Kitakami River and a symbol of Morioka. The river separates Morioka’s station area from the city center, and to reach downtown you must cross a bridge. The Kitakami River has several bridges with charming names—such as Yugaoze-bashi, Asahi-bashi, and Kozukata-bashi—but Kaiunbashi is especially beloved by locals. It is also known by the nickname "Nido Naki-bashi" (the "two-time crying bridge"). The story goes that people transferred to Morioka cross it in tears, thinking, "I’ve come so far," and then cry again when leaving because Morioka’s warmth makes it hard to say goodbye. From the bridge, you can enjoy a beautiful view across the river, and on clear days the majestic silhouette of Mt. Iwate stands out as a memorable sightseeing photo spot. Near the bridgehead you’ll find an information board explaining the bridge’s history; reading it before crossing can make the experience even more meaningful. Kaiunbashi is located about 300 meters straight along the main road from "Morioka Station" South Exit. On the way, there is a small roadside shrine quietly standing with a sign for "Morioka Station-mae Kaiun Shrine." It is said to bring good fortune in love, so you may want to stop and offer a brief prayer. Night lighting on the bridge is carried out in conjunction with events and special occasions.
