Choukou-ji Temple

Choko-ji Temple is a renowned Shingon (Koyasan) temple in Kato City, Hyogo Prefecture, with the mountain name Kanozan. Temple tradition says it was founded in 651 (Hakuchi 2) by the ascetic Hodo Sennin. Access is via JR Kakogawa Line Yashirocho Station, then take Shinki Bus and get off at the “Kamikume Choko-ji-guchi” bus stop; from there it is about a 1-hour walk, as the temple lies deep in the mountains. The main highlight is the main hall, a hip-and-gable roof structure with honkawarabuki (traditional tile roofing), designated as a National Treasure. It is considered one of the representative Muromachi-period temple halls with clearly known construction dates, and also a notable example of “Setchu-yo” (an eclectic style blending Japanese and Chinese elements). The bell tower and the wooden standing statue of Senju Kannon are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The temple is also famous for the “Oni-oi Odori” (Demon-Chasing Dance) held every year on May 5. Praying for bountiful harvests and health, one elder-role performer and four demon roles (red, blue, black, and yellow) leap and dance vigorously to the sound of bells while brandishing items such as torches, swords, axes, and a shakujō staff. The Oni-oi Odori is designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property by Hyogo Prefecture.
