Ena Gorge
Ena Gorge is an artificial lake formed about 90 years ago by the construction of the Oi Dam, which blocks the Kiso River. During the Taisho era, the so-called ‘Electric Power King’ Momosuke Fukuzawa focused on the area’s ideal topography and abundant water resources and devoted himself to building the dam. The gorge was named ‘Ena Gorge’ by the world-renowned geographer Shiga Shigetaka, who praised the harmony between the lake scenery created by the Oi Dam and the surrounding unique rock formations. Along the shore of Ena Gorge lies Sazanami Park, where walking paths extend around the dam lake and allow visitors to enjoy leisurely strolls. In spring, cherry blossoms, azaleas, and wisteria come into full bloom. Summer features events such as the Ena Summer Fireworks Festival held over the water, while autumn transforms the surrounding mountains and lake surface with vibrant red and yellow hues from maple and other autumn leaves. In winter, birdwatching is popular, with sightings of mandarin ducks and starlings. Ena Gorge is also known for its many strange and impressive rock formations shaped by natural erosion, including nationally designated natural monuments such as Kasa-iwa (Umbrella Rock), Byobu-iwa (Folding Screen Rock), and Shishi-iwa (Lion Rock). Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from the Ena Gorge Observatory or take a sightseeing boat cruise to fully appreciate the beauty of the gorge.
