Zao-Juhyo
The Zao Juhyo (Snow Monsters) refers to ice formations that appear from December to early March mainly near the summit area of the Zao Ski Resort. They form when supercooled water droplets in the air freeze onto trees under strong winds, creating hardened ice masses. They can only form where wind direction is stable, conifers are present to collect ice and snow, and snowfall is sufficient without crushing the trees. During the peak season from January to March, many tourists visit to see the juhyo. To reach the juhyo area near the summit from the base, visitors use a ropeway, or a combination of sky cable and lifts. In season, an optional snowcat service called the “Night Cruiser” also operates to tour the juhyo area. On a clear day, the view of pure-white juhyo under a deep blue sky is an incomparable spectacle. Some look like white cherry blossoms with branches fully coated, others resemble giant monsters, and no two formations are the same. At the summit there is a restaurant facing the slopes with full windows; you can enjoy Yamagata specialties like tama-konnyaku or imoni soba while viewing the juhyo.
