Zao Ropeway
The Zao Ropeway is a ropeway facility reached by taking a 40-minute bus ride from JR Yamagata Station and getting off at the Zao Onsen Bus Terminal. It connects “Zao Sanroku Station” to “Juhyo Kogen Station” and onward to “Zao Jizo Sancho Station.” The summit line between Juhyo Kogen Station and Zao Jizo Sancho Station uses a “Funitel” gondola system (also used at places like the Hakone Ropeway), designed to reduce swaying and allow safe travel even in strong winds or blizzards. Accessibility is also considered: steps between the platform and gondola are eliminated, and staff including a Service Care Worker Level 2 are stationed so wheelchair users can enjoy the trip comfortably to the top. The scenery from the ropeway is excellent—autumn brings sweeping red and yellow foliage, while winter offers a fantastical world of snow monsters. As you approach the summit station, Mt. Kumano appears, making you feel the high elevation of around 1,661 meters.
