Yamagata Zao Onsen Ski Resort

Yamagata Zao Onsen Ski Resort is a ski area reached by taking a 40-minute bus ride from JR Yamagata Station and getting off at the Zao Onsen Bus Terminal. With a maximum run length of 9,000 meters and 32 lifts, it is Japan’s largest standalone ski resort in terms of area, making it a major snow resort. Across 14 slopes, there are 12 courses that make use of the terrain and offer great variety for everyone from beginners to experts. The steep “Yokokura Wall,” with moguls in places and a near-vertical feel, is especially famous and very popular with advanced skiers. There are many rental shops on the slopes, so you can visit without bringing your own gear. A must-see at Zao is the “Juhyo” (snow monsters). The spectacular juhyo scenery on the upper Juhyo-gen Course is a world-class attraction, drawing visitors from Japan and abroad. During the “Juhyo Festival,” typically held from late December to late February, the illuminated snow monsters can be seen in a magical night view.
