Toukouen

Tokoen is a long-established ryokan in Kaike Onsen, one of the San’in region’s representative hot spring areas, with views of the Sea of Japan and Mt. Daisen. The main building “Tendai” was designed by renowned architect Kiyonori Kikutake, inspired by Izumo Taisha and built in 1964; it is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property. Many aspiring architects and designers visit each year to study its bold, distinctive design. The garden and large bath were designed by world-famous sculptor Masayuki Nagare; despite being by masters of different fields, the building and garden harmonize beautifully. The grand bath features an alkaline spring rare in Kaike Onsen, said to be good for the skin; day-use bathing and private baths are also available. Meals highlight seasonal tastes and the San’in region’s sea and mountain delicacies. Tokoen also offers plans that support telework/workation, making it valuable beyond sightseeing. Access: by train, about 15 minutes by taxi from JR Yonago Station (San’in / Hakubi / Sakai lines). By bus, take a bus from Yonago Station to “Kaike Onsen Kanko Center” (about 25 minutes). By car, about 10 minutes from Yonago IC. In winter, be aware of possible chain restrictions.
