Kakitagawa River Park
Kakitagawa Park is a park adjacent to the clear Kakitagawa River, which flows through Shimizu Town in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture. The Kakitagawa is a rare river in Japan that is fed by spring water from Mt. Fuji; it is designated a National Natural Monument and is also counted as one of Japan’s “Three Great Clear Streams.” From two observation platforms inside the park, you can view the “Wakima,” where beautiful water bubbles up year-round. At the spring-water plaza, you can even dip your feet in and feel how cold the spring water is. From the walking paths that follow the river, visitors can observe waterside plants and rare creatures, making it a popular spot to experience precious nature up close. Representative wildlife living in the Kakitagawa includes the common kingfisher, Genji fireflies, Aohada dragonflies, and ayu (sweetfish). The surrounding area also has eateries where you can enjoy tofu made with the spring water—perfect for recharging while feeling close to nature. Access: about 20 minutes by bus from the South Exit of JR “Mishima” Station; by car, about 12 minutes from Tomei Expressway Numazu IC. A paid parking lot is available on site.
