Matsue Castle Town
Matsue Castle Town refers to the samurai streets extending from Matsue Castle in Matsue City. Many historic buildings line the area, including Matsue Castle, samurai residences, and the Koizumi Yakumo Former Residence, and preservation efforts keep the traditional townscape intact—making it feel like time travel. From Matsue Castle (a National Treasure) the castle town continues through the samurai residence area along a street called Shiomi Nawate. This street is designated as a traditional scenic preservation district. As you walk, you encounter the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum and Hearn’s Former Residence, both open for visits. The Bukeyashiki (samurai residence museum) can also be toured to see how samurai lived. There is also the Tanabe Art Museum, as well as soba shops and more. Even the side alleys retain Edo-period-style scenery, making it possible to spend a full day sightseeing. Access: from Matsue Station, take a bus, get off at “Kokuhō Matsue-jō / Kenchō-mae,” and it’s right there.
