Tamatsukuri Onsen
Tamatsukuri Onsen is a hot-spring town in Matsue City. Ryokan line the Tamayu River as it flows toward Lake Shinji. With the sea nearby and mountains on three sides, it has a wonderful setting, and simply walking along the river creates a dignified, sacred atmosphere. Many inns put effort into their baths and gardens, and some offer day-use bathing, making onsen-hopping enjoyable. Food is also a highlight, with inns competing to serve excellent meals—from Shimane local cuisine to luxurious seafood and meat. It is said to be Japan’s oldest “beauty onsen,” known for high moisturizing power and for keeping you warm for a long time after bathing. Using Tamatsukuri Onsen as a base for San’in sightseeing is also recommended. Within the area, attractions like Kirakira Bridge, Dondon Bridge, footbaths, and the wish-granting Tamatsukuri-yu Shrine mean you can spend an entire day enjoying the town alone. Access: about 5 minutes by taxi from Tamatsukuri Onsen Station. Many hotels offer free shuttle buses for guests, so consider using those if staying overnight.
