Izumo Taisha

Izumo Taisha is a shrine in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. It is the head shrine of the religious corporation Izumo Taisha-kyo and is a historic shrine often compared in prominence to Ise Jingu. It is a popular destination year-round and is especially known as a place for enmusubi (forming connections/relationships) and as a “god of good fortune.” Some shops near the shrine even give visitors a five-yen coin in a small bag as they leave. Many regard it as a powerful spiritual spot, and because the grounds are large, it’s recommended to walk around and enjoy the atmosphere thoroughly. Izumo Taisha’s omikuji are said not to use typical “great blessing” or “bad luck” ratings; instead they provide guidance from the deities. The large shimenawa (sacred rope) is iconic, and there is a folk belief about tossing coins toward the cut end. If you strongly wish for the best “en” (connections), the Kamiarizuki/Kamiza-sai season is often recommended because deities are believed to gather there—though it will also be very crowded. The main hall is designated a National Treasure. Access: from JR Izumoshi Station, take a bus for about 25 minutes.
