Shuri Kinjo Town Cobblestone Road
Shuri Kinjo-cho Ishidatami Road is an old stone-paved path in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture. It is located in Kinjo-cho, which was the castle town area during the Ryukyu Kingdom era. It is part of the old official road called Madama-michi, most of which was lost during World War II but was reconstructed in 1983. The rough Ryukyu limestone paving stones are thoughtfully laid for pedestrians, even in the details. The stone-paved section is about 240–300 meters long. Along the route you’ll find power spots such as a giant akagi tree said to be about 300 years old and utaki sacred sites; there is also a communal water place remaining at the Kinjo Ōhigawa, adding to the sense of history. The giant akagi is designated a National Natural Monument. Traditional houses line the path and people still live there today. Because the stones are not smoothly processed, wear comfortable walking shoes and walk quietly. The road is also sloped, so those less confident with walking should take it slowly. At the top, you’ll find Shuri Kinjo-cho Muraya where you can take a break. Access is about 25 minutes by bus from Naha Bus Terminal.
