Nagasaki Penguin Aquarium

Nagasaki Penguin Aquarium is an aquarium established to provide opportunities to think about coexistence between people and nature, and also to serve as a “school” where visitors can learn about the natural world. Through penguins—often considered indicator species for environmental conditions—the aquarium presents research, penguin ecology, and related exhibits. You can meet many kinds of penguins here, including king penguins, macaroni penguins, rockhopper penguins, gentoo penguins, Humboldt penguins, Cape penguins, Magellanic penguins, and little penguins. It is also a rare spot where you can experience feeding and even touching Humboldt penguins. Kayak experiences are also available, so it is best to plan your visit to match the days and times those activities are offered. Access by car: from the Nagasaki Expressway “Tarami IC,” head toward Nagasaki City via Yagami, about 15 minutes. By public transportation, take a bus from JR Nagasaki Station: from the “Nagasaki Station-mae South Exit” bus stop (across the pedestrian bridge, in front of “Nihonkai Shoya”), take the bus bound for “Abakasuga Shako-mae,” and get off at “Penguin Aquarium-mae,” about 30 minutes.
