Fukuurajima Island
Fukuurajima is a small island of about 6 hectares floating in Matsushima Bay, one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views. It is reached by crossing the 252 m long vermilion Fukuurabashi Bridge, and it is designated a Prefectural Natural Park with about 250 plant species such as red pines, cedar, camellia, maples, and bamboo. Walking paths circle the island, letting you stroll while enjoying rich nature and Matsushima scenery. Highlights include Benzaiten Hall (Bendo), a lookout point, and Tenjinzaki. The lookout point at the island’s tip offers views of islands such as Kunoshima, Yakishima, and Hikitoushijima. The view from in front of Bendo is also good, facing Hikitoushijima and Yakishima. Walking time is about 50 minutes to reach the lookout loop, or about 30 minutes to reach Bendo. Access: about a 15-minute walk from JR Senseki Line “Matsushima-Kaigan Station.” Walk about 5 minutes east from Godaido to reach the bridge entrance. The bridge toll is paid at the cafe at the entrance. Fukuurabashi is also nicknamed the “Deai Bridge (Meeting Bridge),” and crossing it might bring you a good encounter.
